| The Year 1965 : |
|
|
The year was 1965 I was diagnosed with Epilepsy. Seizures were
part of my life and doctor visits and test were part of my daily
routine. Finally, after many tests my doctor found the right
medicine that would control my seizures and life began to change.
|
|
|
|
Instead of seizures on a daily basis I began to live somewhat of a normal
life. All I had to do was continue taking the medicine on a regular basis
that my doctor prescribed. At 46 now, I’m still taking the same
medication that I was taking back in 1965. I’m thankful to God for
His mercy and grace for allowing me to be seizure free for all these
years.
Throughout my childhood, teenage and early adult years I continued to be
examined and it was concluded that I would be taking medication and have
the stigma of having Epilepsy for the rest of my life. I accepted this
and really never gave much thought to it, since my seizures are controlled
by medication. My father worked a job that provided Health Insurance so I
was always taken care of while I was at home living with my parents. Once
I moved out and was taken off my father's Insurance I was on my own and
was left to finding Health Insurance and a job that would provide Health
Insurance coverage for me and my family.

| The Years from 1970 – 2007 : |
|
During these years many things had happened, I was denied entrance into
the Armed Services. Life Insurance companies declined my applications for
Life Insurance or rated them up. Most recently I applied for Health
Insurance with several major Health Insurance carriers whom said they
would not cover me. And if they did offer me coverage it was clear they
would put a 99-year rider on the policy that stated anything involving
Epilepsy would not be covered.
Not forgetting to mention, I have a 16-year-old daughter who has health
issues relating to an eating disorder. And she most recently was involved
in an auto accident where another 16 year old had been drinking and driving.
My daughter was not killed, however; she was severely injured with a
broken pelvis in four areas.
Sharing with you several stories about my daughter and myself has and will
allow you to see that my daughter and I are real and vulnerable just like
anyone else. No-fault of ours, life has thrown us a curve.
The hope I have for dads4change is to create accountability and awareness
as I have repetitively said and that no one has to go through what my
daughter and I have gone through. Creating lasting accountability and
awareness is the goal of dads4change.org
